It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Starting in January, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will take a quarterly break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.
New Release Strategy
Going forward, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The One Piece anime had a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and allow the manga to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to supply viewers with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.
Embracing Seasonal Format
While some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the story. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with some instead handling more material or additional to make up for time.
This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have so many side stories, and the quality of the art can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each annually, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
