The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
